The Story Behind Smithfield Eye & Optical

Smithfield Eye & Optical is part of a doctor-led family of eye care practices built around personal relationships, trusted care, and a better optical experience.

A Doctor-Led Vision

Built by Two Doctors, Not a Boardroom

Smithfield Eye & Optical is part of a doctor-led family of eye care practices founded by two optometrists — Dr. John Ormando and Dr. Scott Colonna — who believe the best eye care happens when doctors take the time to know their patients and their families.

In 2001, with no investors, no private equity backing, and no corporate playbook, they purchased their first one-doctor practice and never looked back. More than 25 years later, that same independent spirit still guides every practice in the group — including ours.

Dr. John Ormando — This Is Personal

Dr. Ormando grew up in Wilkes-Barre, Pennsylvania, in a family where eye care mattered from the very beginning. He, his mother, and his sister all live with advanced myopia, and some of his earliest childhood memories include going to the eye doctor with his family.

By his sophomore year of high school, he already knew he wanted to become an optometrist.

He completed his training at the SUNY College of Optometry in New York City, one of the nation's leading programs. Over more than 25 years in practice, he has brought that same personal connection to every patient relationship.

For Dr. Ormando, this work is personal — a chance to bring independent, relationship-based eye care to communities like the one he grew up in.

Dr. Scott Colonna — Resilience and Purpose

Dr. Colonna came to optometry from a different path. A recruited college basketball player from Staten Island, he saw his athletic career end after an injury during his first semester. That experience taught him early that life can change quickly — and that what matters most is how you respond.

He enrolled at the SUNY College of Optometry, where he met Dr. Ormando. Their partnership was built not just on shared professional values, but on a shared vision: that people in every community deserve access to quality, personal eye care.

More than 25 years later, that vision still drives every decision they make together.

Two Doctors, One Purpose

The two met at the SUNY College of Optometry in New York City. In 2001, with no investors, no private equity backing, and no corporate playbook, they purchased their first one-doctor practice and never looked back.

They opened their doors in a community that needed more access to quality eye care. They adjusted their hours so working families could come after work. They built relationships slowly, honestly, and one patient at a time.

More than 25 years later, that same independent spirit still guides them. Their group has grown, but the philosophy has not changed: take the best care of people like everyone is family, and never let eye care feel rushed, cold, or corporate.

Independent

No investors. No private equity. No corporate playbook. Just two doctors who answer to their patients, not a boardroom.

Family-Centered

From a child's first eye exam to adult medical eye care, the whole family is welcome here — and everyone is treated like one.

Community-First

They built their first practice by adjusting hours for working families. They bring that same commitment to every community they serve.

What This Means for You

At Smithfield Eye & Optical, that vision shows up in the way our team welcomes patients, helps families navigate their eye care, and makes the optical experience feel personal instead of rushed.

Whether you've been coming here for years or you've never walked through the door, you'll find the same thing either way: doctors who take the time to know you, a team that treats your family like their own, and an eyewear experience that feels personal — not transactional.
