The Right Contacts for Your Eye Needs

Contact lenses correct your eye problems without the constraints of eyeglasses. They’re great tools when used correctly. Buying contacts online or off the shelves without proper guidance from an optometrist can be risky. Lenses that don’t fit your eyes can damage your cornea and may give you an eye infection.

Our team of optometrists at Smithfield Eye & Optical provides precise examinations and we’ll make sure your contacts are customized to your eyes’ needs. Schedule an appointment with our eye doctors for a safe and comfortable contact lens exam.

A Professional Custom Fit

Ill-fitting contact lenses are very uncomfortable and can lead to eye infections. Ordering contacts without proper examination can be more detrimental than helpful. A professional examination by an optometrist is necessary to make sure your eyes agree with your contact lenses.

We offer comprehensive examinations to determine your prescription and the right type of lenses for your needs. We also perform follow-up exams to make sure your eyes are happy with their contacts

Different Lenses for Different Lifestyles

Not all ocular conditions are made equal, and we reflect that in the range of different contact lens options we offer. We typically perform corneal topography to determine what type of lens best suits your eye shape. Whatever your vision requires, Smithfield Eye & Optical will provide.

Scleral lenses are custom-fitted lenses that rest on your sclera (the white part of the eye). These lenses are special because they don’t sit on your cornea like most other lenses. Because of this, they may be more stable and provide more comfort than conventional lenses.

Scleral lenses are especially recommended for people with irregularly shaped corneas, including people with keratoconus.

Soft contact lenses are a common lens choice for many patients. They are made of a soft plastic that allows oxygen to pass through to the eye’s surface. Soft contact lenses are available in disposable formats for daily, weekly, or monthly wear.

These lenses aren’t spherical like most traditional lenses, and because of that, they offer a slimmer profile. They’re thinner, lighter, and flatter than conventional lenses. A great choice for people with mild astigmatism.

Toric lenses are custom-made lenses that correct astigmatism. They’re usually different for each eye, taking into account the different shapes your cornea has. A toric lens creates different focusing powers on the vertical and horizontal axis to correct the effects of an oddly shaped cornea.

Multifocal lenses are for people who have presbyopia, which is a difficulty seeing at varying distances. The contact lenses contain different prescriptions within the lens. They offer a smooth transition between different areas of focus by gradually changing the lens’s powers from top to bottom.

More durable than soft contact lenses, RGP lenses are also more resistant to the buildup of deposits. These rigid lenses can take more time to get used to wearing, but usually last much longer than a pair of soft lenses.

These lenses are both rigid gas-permeable lenses (RGP) and soft lenses all-in-one. The soft outer skirt allows for a more comfortable fit while the harder lens provides crisp vision. These lenses are the best of both worlds.

Transition contacts are a new technology for lens wearers. They change colors depending on how much light is passing through them. This gives you more freedom and allows you to go outside without putting on sunglasses.

Ortho-k contacts are lenses primarily used for myopia control. These lenses temporarily reshape the form of the cornea to improve vision. They’re usually worn at night to reshape the cornea while the patient sleeps.
